Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou offers honest opinion on 1-0 loss v Palace

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has blamed his side’s 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace on ‘a lot of disruptions’ that impacted Spurs’ ability to deliver a fluid attacking display at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham came into the game in near-perfect form, having won seven of their previous eight games (L1) across all competitions, including back-to-back wins against West Ham United and AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

They scored 20 goals during that explosive run but couldn’t find their goalscoring boots at Selhurst Park, as Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first-half strike condemned them to their fourth defeat this season.

Tottenham struggled to hit their stride in a game that was marred by relentless stoppages, with both sides accumulating 28 fouls and eight yellow cards between them.

Postecoglou couldn’t hide his disappointment as his side came away from the derby showdown in south London empty-handed.

“It was one of those games with a lot of stoppages and battles, and they ended up winning a lot of them and coming out on top,” Postecoglou said on BBC Match of the Day.

“There was a lot of disruption, and it was hard to get any fluency. They did better than us. It turned into a game they were thriving on, and we should have dealt with it better.

“It was a poor goal to concede, it had nothing to do with playing out from the back. That can happen. I’d be very surprised if they were happy right now.

“Why would I be happy? If I’m unhappy, then they’ll be unhappy. If you’re suggesting that our fans weren’t happy with today, then that’s a fair assessment.”

Defeat to Palace leaves Tottenham in eighth place in the Premier League table, five points behind the top four, but they can’t afford to dwell on the result for too long.

The north Londoners must now switch their focus to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup action as they host Manchester City in the fourth round.
