Liverpool’s outstanding start under manager Arne Slot continued on Tuesday night as they crushed Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at Anfield in the Champions League.
The Reds failed to break the deadlock in a low-key, uneventful first-half, but the floodgates opened after Luis Diaz opened the scoring with a composed finish in the 61st minute.
Cody Gakpo doubled their advantage from Mohamed Salah’s cross before Diaz struck again with a close-range finish.
The Colombian completed his first hat-trick for Liverpool by smashing home a rebound in stoppage-time as the Reds won by an emphatic 4-0 scoreline.
Diaz rightly bagged all the accolades but we think Curtis Jones also deserves massive credit for the huge victory.
The sensational player delivered a masterclass performance in front of the home crowd on Tuesday. He was full of energy and pressed relentlessly throughout the game.
It was his defence-splitting pass to Diaz that broke the deadlock after the hour mark.
Jones, who came off the bench to set up Salah’s winner against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, also posted excellent numbers in the Champions League match last night.
The 23-year-old completed 100% of his long balls and 100% of his crosses. He had 51 touches, boasting 90% passing accuracy.
The midfielder registered three key passes, had a shot on target and won four of his five ground duels.
Jones has been an important player for Arne Slot’s side this season. He has featured in 12 games across all competitions so far, with five goal contributions to his name.
One of his best performances came in the 2-1 victory against Chelsea last month when he won the penalty before scoring the winner with a superb finish.
