Celtic produced a memorable performance, securing an enormous win against German side RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday night at Parkhead.
With the humiliating defeat against Borussia Dortmund still fresh in mind, many pundits didn’t expect the Bhoys to pick up all three points against another strong German side.
The situation became tougher for them when they conceded early in the first half. Nicolas Kuhn will rightly get all the plaudits for his fantastic brace, but there were other top performers as well.
Chris Sutton has rightly pointed out that Auston Trusty, Reo Hatate, and Callum McGregor were outstanding, but he has failed to mention the name of an unsung hero, Alistair Johnston, who was simply sensational on the night.
The Daily Record gave him a 7/10 rating, adding that it does not come as a big surprise that the Bhoys are looking to tie him down on a new contract.
Alistair Johnston – the unsung hero for Celtic
When we talk about Celtic players, we usually mention the likes of McGregor, Kuhn, Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi or Cameron Carter-Vickers, who are generally the stand-out performers at the club.
Johnston, in that respect, goes under the radar, but he is an equally important part of the team. His consistency is unbelievable, and he always comes up with big performances in big games.
Against Leipzig, he was terrific at the back. He made four clearances, five tackles, one interception and blocked one effort. He won six out of nine ground duels and won 100% aerial duels.
The 26-year-old made some fantastic overlaps, and it was his cross down the right that led to the third goal, although the Leipzig goalkeeper could have done better.
The defender made 114 touches and played out 80 passes with 90% accuracy. The stats reflect how good he was against the German side.
