Arsenal in the race to sign Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal are one of the clubs in the race to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, arguably the most in-form striker in the world with 17 goals in the past nine games, according to Record (Page 12-13).

The Swedish international has taken the world by storm since joining the Lisbon giants from Coventry City in 2023. He spearheaded the Green and Whites to the Primeira Liga title in his first season with 29 goals and ten assists in the league.

That blistering form has carried on into the new season, with the 26-year-old looking unstoppable for club and country. He has netted 24 goals in 19 appearances for Sporting across all competitions. He bagged five goals and an assist in two matches over the November international break.

His form has put top European sides on red alert, and Arsenal are considering a move for the striker to bolster their forward line. Their attackers have faltered this season.

Gabriel Jesus continues to underwhelm while leading the line. German international Kai Havertz blows hot and cold. Manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly after a centre-forward capable of spearheading them to a Premier League title as they bid to end their 20-year wait.

Arsenal went after RB Leipzig man Benjamin Sesko over the summer, but it did not work out as he signed a new deal with the German club. They turned their attention to Joshua Zirkzee, but he chose to join Manchester United instead.

The Gunners are still in the market for a centre-forward, and Gyokeres would be a coup for the north London club, but they will not land him so easily with several top European sides chasing his signature.

Per the report, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester United are following his exploits and could swoop for him.

However, among those clubs, only Arsenal lack a definitive starting striker, and he will likely get more game time under Arteta. They must convince Sporting to accept a lower fee than his €100 million release clause.
