Newcastle United were low on confidence after back-to-back defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea in the Premier League.
However, the mood around St James’ Park has massively improved following the Magpies’ recent successes.
The Tyneside club outclassed the Blues 2-0 in the Carabao Cup before claiming a big victory over Arsenal in the English top-flight on Saturday.
Newcastle made a perfect start to the home contest as Anthony Gordon picked out Alexander Isak with a pinpoint cross who made no mistake to nod home the opener.
Arsenal tried to make a comeback but Eddie Howe’s men held out to seal an excellent victory.
BBC pundit Troy Deeney was left particularly impressed with Anthony Gordon. He said the Magpies are a better team when Gordon is involved and called him a ‘wonderful football player’.
The former Watford star also included the 23-year-old in his Premier League team of the week.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Deeney said: “Newcastle are a better team when he is involved. He got an assist for Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal, but the way he drives with the ball and carries the team forward means he’s always a threat. He can be on the right, left or the middle – he’s just a wonderful football player for Newcastle and England. Getting injured and then missing a penalty against Everton could have knocked his confidence but didn’t. He’s straight back on the horse, straight at it – I can respect that”.
Anthony Gordon has been a key member of Eddie Howe’s team this season. He has started nine Premier League matches so far, with two goals and an assist to his name.
The 23-year-old missed a penalty on his return to Everton last month, but he didn’t let that have a negative effect on his game.
The forward produced an impressive display in Saturday’s game against Arsenal as he brilliantly set up Isak for the decisive goal.
He also registered two key passes and made three tackles, an interception and a clearance.
