Newcastle United had a huge opportunity to close the gap to the top four by beating West Ham United on Monday.
However, the Magpies slumped to a disappointing 2-0 loss at St James’ Park, with the result leaving them 10th in the Premier League.
Newcastle went into the game as heavy favourites, as they were coming off the back of three consecutive wins in all competitions.
But they couldn’t get anything from the home contest because of their wastefulness in front of goal and defensive weaknesses.
Eddie Howe doesn’t have time to dwell on that defeat, as he prepares to take his team to Crystal Palace this weekend.
In a big boost for the English boss, Joe Willock is available for the away fixture on Saturday.
Willock was forced off with a knock against the Hammers, but he has returned to training and is in contention for the game (h/t the Chronicle).
The 25-year-old has been a key player for Newcastle this season, making 10 Premier League appearances.
Initially used as an impact substitute, Howe has started the midfielder in his previous four matches in all competitions.
The English boss will be desperate to return to winning ways after the West Ham defeat, and Willock’s return is a big boost for him.
However, Howe may not have the services of Bruno Guimaraes, who also went off injured against the Irons but is yet to be back in training.
The Brazilian picked up a glute injury and has had treatment on the issue since. But he wasn’t pictured training on Wednesday.
