Liverpool Eager to Keep Progressing Under Slot

Plenty of doom-mongers questioned whether Arne Slot would be able to successfully replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

While it is much too early to provide a definitive answer, the early signs suggest that Slot has taken to life at Liverpool like a duck to water.

The acid test will undoubtedly come during the rest of the season – a point acknowledged by captain Virgil van Dijk after their most recent Champions League outing.

The defender described Liverpool as a ‘work in progress’ after the 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, which was a fair point after the team’s underwhelming first-half performance.

“We want to be happy at the end of the season, and that is all about working each day and working on things that we have to improve because there are still so many things to improve,” Van Dijk said.

“We all know that as players, and the manager is very keen to show that too. The manager wants us to defend in a certain way, and we try to do that and solve things on the pitch as best we can.

“It doesn’t always go perfectly, as you’ve seen in so many games. But the good thing is we make sure we are willing to defend together. When they beat the press, we are back not to concede any chances or crosses or whatever.

“There are so many moments and things in games that we are doing well. I think so far, so good, in terms of results.”

Liverpool will have the opportunity to demonstrate the improvements they have made under Slot when the reigning European champions visit Anfield at the end of the month.

Madrid Have a Point to Prove at Liverpool

While Liverpool’s Champions League campaign has been going swimmingly, Madrid have endured a roller-coaster ride in their first four games.

Home victories over Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund have kept Madrid in contention for a top-eight finish, but defeats against Lille and AC Milan have made the job more difficult.

The 3-1 home defeat against Milan was particularly concerning given that the Italian side have struggled to produce their best form throughout the season.

The result followed hot on the heels of a 4-0 home defeat by Barcelona in La Liga, leaving manager Carlo Ancelotti searching for answers to the team’s problems.

“We have to be concerned – the team is not playing well,” Ancelotti said. “The team is not compact – we need to be more compact and more organised. We’ve conceded a lot of goals.

“The team is not well organised on the pitch, and we need to work on this. We have to focus on what we have today, which is a team that is not at its best, and get back to our level so we can fight for all competitions.

“It’s a collective thing that we need to fix quickly. On the pitch, something is missing, and we have not been able to show our best version. We have to fix this, but the nights are going to be very long, and we have to recover the solidity that we are lacking.

“That’s the problem above all – we’ve conceded too many goals for a team that is built on solidity.”

Ancelotti’s comments struck a note with the players as they produced an improved performance to record a 4-0 home win over Osasuna in their last league game.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid – Prediction

Although Liverpool are the favourites to maintain their unbeaten record in this season’s Champions League, it would be foolish to write off Madrid’s chances.

Madrid have won seven and drawn one of their previous 11 meetings with the Reds and will be eager to prove a point when they visit Anfield.

The La Liga outfit have not been defeated by Liverpool since 2009 and will fancy their chances of continuing their dominance against the English club.

Madrid are generally a dangerous animal when things have not been going their way and they are fancied to take at least one point from a fiercely fought encounter.
