Door open for Celtic to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for free next summer

Celtic looked to sign a new goalkeeper during the summer window, and they checked on several options.

In the end, the Bhoys signed veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel on a one-year deal to replace Joe Hart.

The Danish goalkeeper has been outstanding for the club, but Celtic will have to replace him at some point.

Celtic appear to have adopted an interesting transfer policy when it comes to recruiting a goalkeeper.

They are signing experienced goalkeepers who have a wealth of Premier League experience on a cheap deal rather than investing heavily in a young keeper.

Usually, goalkeepers have a long playing career, and while they lose a bit of reflex, they are still good enough to play at the top level in their late 30s.

With that in mind, should Celtic move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the summer window or in January?

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror, Newcastle are unwilling to extend his contract after the end of the season, which means he’ll be a free agent.

Celtic attempted to sign the Slovakian goalkeeper in the summer window, and there is an opportunity for the Bhoys to get him at Parkhead for either free next summer or for a measly fee in January.

Champions League football could tempt Dubravka

There is interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, and if it purely comes down to money, Celtic have no chance of competing with the mega-rich clubs.

Dubravka is a vastly experienced goalkeeper. He has made 152 appearances in the Premier League for the Magpies and has 50 caps for his country.

Celtic can lure him with the offer of regular Champions League football, and it might prove too tempting for Dubravka to reject straightaway.

The Slovakian goalkeeper has a few years left in him, and Celtic should look to get him on a bargain deal.
