James Trafford a potential option for Tottenham Hotspur following long-term injury to Guglielmo Vicario

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is a potential option for Tottenham Hotspur in January after Guglielmo Vicario underwent surgery after playing on with a fractured ankle against Manchester City on Saturday, according to talkSPORT.

Vicario’s injury has left Spurs surprised and he is now facing months out of action, with manager Ange Postecoglou now keen to bolster his options in goal when the transfer window reopens at the turn of the New Year.

Fraser Forster will be in goal for Tottenham going forward, but a move for Trafford could be on the cards, with the 22-year-old keen to return to the Premier League.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer believes the Burnley star is ‘world-class’, and his regular invites to the senior national team are testament to the quality of the former Manchester City goalie.

Trafford made 28 Premier League appearances last term and has featured in 15 Championship games so far this term.

Spurs need a goalkeeper capable of giving both Forster and Vicario a run for their money, and the Englishman fits the bill as he is also comfortable with playing out from the back.

A couple of English top-flight clubs have been keeping tabs on Trafford since Burnley got relegated, and he could be back in the Premier League in the coming months.

However, the Clarets could be uninterested in listening to suitors over their goalie in January as they are currently in the play-off places in the Championship table after 16 games.

Burnley are fourth in the table, two points behind leaders Leeds United, and they will fancy their chances of sealing an immediate return to the big time.

As a result, Tottenham may need to look elsewhere for goalkeeping reinforcements in January, and their scouts will not be short of quality options.
