Jamie Carragher has made some adjustments to his Premier League predictions from the start of 2024-25, tipping Tottenham Hotspur to narrowly miss out on the top-four and Aston Villa to finish in sixth-place.
Spurs finished fifth last term, missing out on the last Champions League spot to Villa by two points, and while Carragher initially predicted a fourth-place finish for the North London club, he believes their inconsistency could see Chelsea pip them to the spot.
The Sky Sports pundit predicted Villa to finish sixth, and he reckons that is still going to happen despite the recent underwhelming run manager Unai Emery and his men have had.
“I think Tottenham might just miss out, but that is not so much about them,” Carragher said.
“I think Chelsea have been so impressive at the start of the season and a lot better than I think they would be.
“So I am actually looking at Chelsea now. I will now change Tottenham for Chelsea because of their inconsistency, so I’m going to go for Tottenham in fifth.
“Sixth, I had Aston Villa. I’m not going to change that, I’m going to keep Aston Villa there.”
Spurs blew Manchester City away 4-0 at the weekend and have also recorded impressive victories against Villa, Manchester United, West Ham United and Everton.
However, they have suffered defeats to Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, drawing against Leicester City, and fans cannot predict which team will turn up whenever they take to the field.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has to find a way to make his side consistent as they can challenge for major silverware if that problem can be solved.
They are currently in sixth place after 12 league games, with only a superior goal difference separating them from eighth-place Villa.
The Midlands club are three points off the top-four, and their European engagement has taken a toll on them from the look of things.
They are without victory in their last seven games across all competitions and will be desperate to return to winning ways when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
