Crystal Palace will be disappointed not to have picked up all three points after they managed a 2-2 draw against Wolves at the Molineux in the Premier League on Saturday (2 November).
After a stale first half, the game sprang into life after the break when Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring for the Eagles in the 67th minute, following some terrible defensive work from the home side.
Jorgen Strand Larsen and Joao Gomes gave Wolves a 2-1 lead, but Palace skipper Marc Guehi tapped home at the back post from a corner, taking full advantage of some calamitous defending from Gary O’Neil’s side.
There was more drama left in the game. Deep into the stoppage time, Jean-Philippe Mateta thought he had given Palace a dramatic victory in the 96th minute when he slotted a loose ball in the back of the net.
However, the goal was denied after the referee felt that Daniel Munoz had fouled Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa in the build-up.
Kevin Nolan on BBC Radio 5 said that he simply can’t understand why the goal was not given. Several replays clearly suggest that Sa had dropped the ball when he came in contact with Munoz, but it was deemed as a foul.
What Kevin Nolan said about Crystal Palace controversy
Nolan said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “I must admit I would be really disappointed if I was Crystal Palace. Daniel Munoz made a fair attempt to play the ball, the ball has then come out of Jose Sa’s hands and Jean-Philippe Mateta has put it in the net.
“I don’t understand how the referee has given a free-kick to Wolves there. Sa reaches around the leg of Munoz to get to the ball and that is why he drops it. His momentum takes Munoz out and then the fumble happens.”
End to end open game but Palace should be disappointed
Palace should be really disappointed with the result as they should have killed the competition long before, but they missed several scoring opportunities.
Wolves did really well to punish them, but their fragile defence proved to be their biggest demon, as Guehi was left unmarked at the near post.
The Eagles have extended their unbeaten run to three games in all competitions, and Oliver Glasner will be pleased to find that the confidence among the players is growing gradually.
Palace are without a host of key players through injuries and will get even better when they return after the international break.
