Manchester United have reportedly ramped up the pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, according to the Daily Mail. The Reds want to bolster their forward line and are looking to reunite him with his former boss at Old Trafford.
The Swedish international forward spearheaded the Green and Whites to the league title last season with 29 goals and ten assists and has carried that electric form into the current campaign. He has already bagged 24 goals in 19 appearances for his club this term. He is one of the most in-form strikers in the world.
United manager Ruben Amorim knows all about his qualities, having coached him for a year and a half, and would be happy to have him in Manchester.
United need a striker with both centre-forwards on their books struggling to make any impact. Rasmus Hojlund has shown flashes of brilliance since joining the club from Atalanta, but his measly return has left many at the club disappointed.
The Reds inexplicably decided to provide competition for the young Dane by signing Joshua Zirkzee. The signs were already there that he wasn’t what they needed. He managed only 13 goals in 53 appearances for Bologna.
United needed an experienced and prolific striker but signed a young Dutchman still finding his feet in senior football. Unsurprisingly, Zirkzee has one goal for the club in 18 appearances and has been linked with a move back to Italy.
Gyokeres, valued at €70 million by Transfermarkt, would give United a new dimension in attack. He is a deadly finisher with unbelievable feet for a man of his size. He might be the man to save United from their mediocre output.
However, Gyokeres won’t come cheap or easy. The 26-year-old has a €100 million release clause in his contract, and the Primeira Liga club do not have to do suitors any favours.
Also, United could face competition from several European giants eyeing the former Brighton & Hove Albion star. Although, they have the upper hand with Amorim at the helm.
