Rangers defender John Souttar simply brilliant v Hearts

Rangers picked up a crucial 1-0 win against Hearts at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

The Gers needed to bounce back in the league after they lost 2-1 against Aberdeen in their previous game.

Rangers picked up some confidence ahead of this game after securing a 1-1 draw in midweek against Olympiakos in the Europa League.

Cyriel Dessers, who scored in the previous game, was on target in the sixth minute to put the home side in front, but apart from that, Rangers were pretty ordinary.

James Tavernier, who provided the assist for the goal, lost possession 15 times during the game, and the Daily Record rightly gave him a 5/10 rating.

Nicolas Raskin was brilliant once again, but one player who was simply outstanding was centre-back John Souttar.

The Gers defender shines yet again

The 28-year-old produced a stellar performance at the back against the Greek side on Thursday, and he was absolutely brilliant against Hearts at Ibrox on Sunday.

He struggled with injuries when he first arrived, but now the defender is a key asset for the club. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and the defender is repaying the faith of his manager with consistent performances.

Against Hearts, he made two tackles and 11 clearances and only lost possession nine times during the game.

The Scottish defender won six out of eight duels and managed 91% passing accuracy. He made 100 touches and attempted 13 long balls – clearly, the defender was head and shoulders above the rest.

The Daily Record gave him a 7/10 rating, but he probably deserved higher markings, somewhere around 8-8.5.

Rangers are already nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen, and they really need to improve. They have got the desired result in this case, but in terms of performance, they are far behind the top two at the moment.

The truth remains that they need to produce much more if they are to match the heights Celtic are hitting at the moment.
