Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah bagged a stellar winner over Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend to keep the Reds atop the Premier League table.
The 32-year-old stormed forward on the counter before cutting in and curling an effort into the top corner. The Merseysiders had been down since Ferdi Kadioglu struck for the Seagulls in the 14th minute.
However, Cody Gakpo found a response on 69 before Salah ensured the win three minutes later as Liverpool continued to look like formidable contenders under new manager Arne Slot.
Liverpool fans were again reminded what they could be missing next season with Salah’s contract at the club expiring this summer. The fans are eager to keep him at the club, but the front office and the player don’t seem to be heading towards an agreement.
Those fans will be excited to read Richard Keys’s recent post, claiming the former Chelsea and AS Roma man is now keen to remain at Anfield. “My information now is that Salah wants to stay, but it’ll take a 3-year deal to settle him down,” Keys wrote.
Salah has been Liverpool’s talisman since he arrived at the club in 2017. No player has scored more goals for Liverpool in the Premier League – 164 in 273 appearances. He has also recorded 74 assists.
He has bagged 220 goals and 96 assists in 364 appearances for the six-time Champions League winners. He has registered nine goals and seven assists in 15 appearances across all competitions this term. This production is hard to replicate, and fans are understandably wary of losing such a star.
Touted replacements do not live up to the billing. Bryan Mbeumo and Johan Bakayoko are fantastic players in their rights, but it is hard to envisage them filling Salah’s boots.
While fans may dream of Salah staying on, Liverpool’s decision-makers will likely not offer him a three-year deal.
From a business standpoint, they could argue that it makes no sense to hand a three-year contract to a player entering the twilight of his career.
It remains to be seen where Salah will be plying his trade next season, but at the moment, it is most likely away from the faithful Kop at Anfield.
