Son Heung-min set to sign new Tottenham Hotspur deal as club triggers contract extension

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min is set to sign a new contract at the North London club, according to the Telegraph.

Spurs have decided to trigger a one-year option on the contract of the South Korean international to commit his future to the club beyond the 2024-25 campaign.

Son joined Tottenham from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and has established himself as a legend for them, with 123 goals to his name in 310 Premier League appearances so far.

He signed his current deal in 2021 and is the highest-paid player at the club right now, earning £190,000 per week.

Son has remained a key player for Spurs for the past nine seasons and will now spend his 11th season with them.

Given how influential he has remained for Tottenham and how he has not shown signs of slowing down yet, the 32-year-old could be offered a new deal next season.

With his current contract ending in seven months, activating the 12-month option in his deal is the best step, and they fully intend to inform him they have triggered it.

Son has started eight of the nine games he has played under manager Ange Postecoglou this term, weighing in with three goals and three assists.

He has no silverware to his name in 417 games for Spurs, losing the finals of the 2020-21 Carabao Cup and 2018-19 Champions League, and he will be desperate to end that drought before he leaves, with 2008 being the last time the club won a trophy.

They will be facing Manchester United in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup in December and will also look to impress during the FA Cup.

Tottenham will also look to challenge for the Europa League and at least finish in the top-four in the Premier League this term after the disappointment of last season, and Son and his teammates will look to ensure Postecoglou continues his tradition of winning silverware in his second season at every club he has managed.
