Ange Postecoglou tears into Timo Werner after Rangers 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur at Ibrox

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has revealed what he told Timo Werner after the match against Rangers at Ibrox.

Werner was in action for Tottenham against Rangers at Ibrox in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

The Germany international forward started on the left of a three-man attacking midfield in 4-2-3-1 formation.

Postecoglou decided to take off Werner at half-time. Dejan Kulusevski came on in his place and scored in the 75th minute. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Spurs head coach Postecoglou was hugely disappointed with Werner, and he has revealed that he strongly criticised the forward in the dressing room after the match.

Werner had an early effort against Rangers go over, and he failed to make an impact as the first half developed. His decision-making was poor and so was his control.

Football.London quotes Postecoglou as saying about Werner: “He wasn’t playing anywhere near the levels he can. Yeah, when you’ve got 18-year-olds, it’s not acceptable to me. I told him that.

“He’s a senior international, a German international. In the moment we’re in now, I need everyone to be at least going out there and giving the best they can. What he produced wasn’t acceptable.

“When I’m asking the younger players to do massive jobs, I expect more from the senior players like him.”

Timo Werner is not good enough for Tottenham

Werner did not have the best of times at Chelsea, and it was a strange decision from Tottenham to bring him back to England even on loan.

The 28-year-old is not guaranteed a place in the starting-up at Spurs. The RB Leipzig-owned forward has pace, but he lacks end product and does not always make the right decisions.

Werner has scored one goal and given three assists in 19 matches in all competitions for Tottenham this season.

Following his loan move from RB Leipzig in January 2024, the forward scored two goals and gave three assists in 13 Premier League matches for Spurs in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

Tottenham have an £8.5 million (BBC Sport) option to make Werner’s loan deal permanent in the summer of 2025. It is hard to see that happening.
