Atlanta United plot swoop for Celtic Star Kyogo Furuhashi

Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi is attracting attention from Major League Soccer (MLS) again, with Atlanta United reportedly considering a fresh approach for the Japanese forward, according to the Daily Mail.

The MLS outfit were prepared to offer around £10 million during the summer transfer window, but Celtic did not give them the green light. They are reportedly keen on revisiting the possibility of securing the 29-year-old.

Despite getting rebuffed in their bid to sign Furuhashi, Atlanta United are undeterred. With two designated player slots available ahead of the new MLS season in February, the club is actively pursuing a marquee signing to strengthen their attacking options.

The designated player rule allows MLS teams to sign high-profile players whose salaries exceed the league’s budget cap, and they have earmarked the Celtic man to take one slot.

Reports suggest that Atlanta United’s negotiations with Benfica for Brazilian striker Arthur Cabral have hit a roadblock over the transfer fee, prompting them to keep Furuhashi on their radar.

New head coach Ronny Deila, who recently took charge of the club, is reportedly behind the move. Celtic fans know him from his time at the club between 2014 and 2016.

Also, Atlanta CEO Garth Lagerwey is pushing for Furuhashi after promising significant reinforcements in 2025.

Furuhashi is tied to a £20,000-a-week contract with Celtic until 2027. He has been instrumental for the Scottish champions since his arrival under Ange Postecoglou.

After scoring 34 goals in his debut season, he netted 19 times last term and has contributed eight goals in 24 appearances this campaign.

While an offer in the region of £10 million could force Celtic to deliberate, the club wants to retain key players as they chase another domestic treble and aim to secure their place in the Champions League play-off stage. With Furuhashi turning 30 in January, any decision will weigh heavily on Celtic’s immediate and long-term ambitions.
