Rangers will face a monumental challenge in the January 2 Scottish Premiership clash against Celtic without their captain and defensive stalwart, James Tavernier.
The influential right-back sustained an injury during the 2-2 draw against Motherwell at Fir Park, compounding an already dire injury situation for Philippe Clement’s side.
Speaking at a press conference, Rangers manager Clement confirmed that the 33-year-old will be sidelined for weeks following the results of a scan. This news delivers a significant blow to the Ibrox club as they prepare for the high-stakes Old Firm encounter.
“James has picked up an injury,” Clement explained (via Sky Sports Scotland). “We took a scan, and there is clear damage. He will be out for a few weeks.”
Adding to Rangers’ defensive crisis, the club is already missing centre-back John Souttar, while Robin Propper, struggling for form, faces immense scrutiny heading into the game.
Clement’s defensive options could be bolstered slightly, however, with Leon Balogun listed as a “touch-and-go” case.
“There is a small chance Leon Balogun can return,” Clement added. “We will see after his individual work this week.”
The absence of Tavernier could not have come at a worse time. Rangers currently trail Celtic by 14 points in the Premiership standings, and the pressure on Clement continues to mount as he searches for his first Old Firm victory since taking over as manager.
Anything less than three points against their fiercest rivals will likely amplify calls for change in the Ibrox dugout.
The injury to Tavernier and the uncertainty around Balogun leave Rangers’ backline in a precarious position ahead of Thursday’s clash. With the stakes higher than ever, Clement must navigate these challenges if his side hopes to reignite their fading title ambitions.
A loss to Celtic would concede the title to the Bhoys for the fourth successive year since their 2021 win.
