West Bromwich Albion won their first home game since September, beating Coventry City 2-0 on Wednesday night at the Hawthorns.
The Baggies were going through a frustrating spell. They were not winning games, but at the same time, they were not losing either.
West Brom drew 10 of their previous 11 games, but Carlos Corberan’s side finally produced the result they badly needed against their local derby rivals.
Alex Mowatt scored the opening goal inside 11 minutes, and Karlan Grant came up with a spectacular solo effort in the 74th minute to secure all three points.
Don Goodman was heavily impressed by Grant’s effort and hailed him as “outstanding” while commentating on the game for Sky Sports.
“He has been the outstanding player for me on the pitch anyway, before this. Just rubberstamps it a little bit,” said the Sky Sports pundit.
West Brom can look to build momentum now
The Baggies are sixth in the Championship table with 32 points and they’re back into the play-offs. It was their second win in 14 games, and they earned a huge three points to re-ignite their promotion push.
Tony Brown rightly said that it was a professional performance from West Brom, but Grant made the real difference in the end.
The 27-year-old striker loves to run with the ball, and he skipped through the Sky Blues defence and then drove towards the goal and found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Jobi McAnuff added on Sky Sports that the victory will give the Baggies a lot of confidence, which can help them build momentum.
In recent matches, we have seen that West Brom haven’t played badly, but when you’re not winning games, you lose a bit of confidence.
That is why they have struggled to play with more fluidity in recent matches. The Baggies probably needed a bit of inspiration, a moment of magic, and Grant has provided them the spark.
