Jamie Carragher astonished by VAR decision in Chelsea 4-3 win v Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur lost 4-3 against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday in a frantic London derby clash.

Spurs have not won their last four games and managed to win only once in their last seven games in all competitions as the pressure mounts on Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham went 2-0 up inside the opening 15 minutes and yet ended up on the losing side once again against their bitter London rivals.

However, the outcome of the game could have been different if Chelsea had gone down to ten men early in the game.

Jamie Carragher suggests that Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo should have picked up a red card for his foul on Pape Matar Sarr.

In the 33rd minute of the game, Caicedo made a reckless challenge on the Spurs midfielder, catching him on the shin.

However, VAR reviewed it and still gave Caicedo the benefit of the doubt, as they felt the challenge lacked “excessive force”.

Carragher said on Sky Sports that he was “astonished” and “couldn’t believe” when the verdict came out, as it seemed like a clear red card.

The popular pundit said: “For me it just seemed like the most obvious red card you would see.”

Kelly Cates intervened: “They said it’s not excessive force.”

Carragher continued: “I can hear the VAR, and as soon he said the words, me and Peter (Drury) looked at each other and were just astonished. I couldn’t believe.”

Poor decision from VAR, it could have changed the game

The referees usually do not want to dish out red cards easily, as they like to keep eleven players on the pitch, especially in a high-voltage derby game.

However, this decision has baffled everyone. It was a reckless tackle and Caicedo should have been sent off.

Spurs were very poor throughout the game, but they did create some very good opportunities to score as well.

The players need to take huge responsibility for failing to do the basics right, while many pundits feel that unless Postecoglou changes his style, Spurs will continue to suffer at the hands of big teams.
