Rangers look to sign centre-back in January

Rangers could be looking to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

According to journalist Joshua Barrie, Rangers need a new centre-back at Ibrox following injuries to John Souttar and Neraysho Kasanwirjo.

Souttar has been outstanding for the Bears this season. He picked up an injury during Rangers’ 1-1 Europa League draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Ibrox, and the Gers could miss him for a number of weeks.

The Scotland defender missed the Premier Sports Cup final against Celtic at Hampden Park on Sunday, and losing him at this crucial stage is a huge blow for the club.

Barrie, while writing for Rangers Review, adds that Rangers could look to sign new centre-backs on loan in January.

He wrote: “The Rangers Review understands that Rangers will look to bolster the centre of defence in the January window with a loan deal possible.”

Rangers missing defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo as well

The Netherlands defender picked up an injury whilst on international duty for the U21 side back in November.

The versatile defender, who joined Rangers on loan from Feyenoord, returned to his parent club to complete his rehab, as per the deal.

Clement previously confirmed that the defender had undergone an operation and would be out for at least four to six months. It means Rangers can only get him back towards the end of the season.

Rangers have shown signs of improvement under Clement in recent weeks, and they will be looking to maintain that impressive form, both in domestic and European games.

With limited money available, signing players on loan makes a lot of sense. Rangers should look to sign quality defenders from Premier League clubs who are not getting regular games at the moment and would prefer loan moves.

Robin Propper and Leon Balagoun are currently the first-choice defenders available for Clement at Rangers, while Dujon Sterling can also play there if needed.
