Alan Shearer shares transfer verdict on Alexander Isak after Newcastle win v Tottenham

Newcastle United picked up their fifth win in a row in the Premier League after they won 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur away from home on Saturday.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak scored for the Magpies in the first half, as they came from behind to seal all three points.

With that result, Newcastle stay rooted in fifth position in the table, with 35 points, sharing the same points with Chelsea, who face Crystal Palace later today.

Isak has been in terrific form this season, and he has now scored in seven consecutive games for the Magpies; only Joe Willock and Alan Shearer have done that before.

The 25-year-old scored a scruffy goal inside the box, and Shearer was extremely pleased with his movement.

After the game, Tim Sherwood said that it could be difficult for Newcastle to keep Isak with them next season, even if they secure Champions League football, because despite being a wealthy club, the Magpies are under financial constraint at the moment.

Shearer suggested that while he has no doubt Isak would improve any Premier League side, he is unsure whether there are enough clubs who can afford him.

Alexander Isak is not going anywhere

Shearer said on the Premier League TV Production: “I am not sure many can afford him.

“They [Newcastle] brought him for around £60 million. Goodness knows what their transfer fee now if they had to sell him.

“They have no desire to sell him, I know that, but if they had to for whatever reasons, then it would be an unbelievable amount for Newcastle to even contemplate.”

Shearer is absolutely spot on here. Isak is seen as a major target for Arsenal, but can the Gunners really afford him?

The Swedish striker is playing at the peak of his form and has scored 13 goals in the Premier League. He has shown no desire to leave St James’ Park, and it would require at least a fee of over £100m to even start the negotiation process.

Eddie Howe will be really pleased with this performance. Spurs applied loads of pressure in the second half, but Newcastle stayed resolute at the back and picked up all three points. The confidence is growing within the team.

The race for the top four is heating up, and Newcastle can definitely secure Champions League football this season if they maintain the momentum.

The PSR threat has restricted the Magpies from doing business freely in the previous transfer window, and the same pattern is expected in January as well. Newcastle will have to sell players to fund moves for potential new arrivals.
