Arsenal set to sign Martin Zubimendi

Arsenal are almost certain to land Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window, according to Sami Mokbel.

Writing for the Daily Mail, the journalist claims that talks are at an advanced stage to sign the midfielder, who was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer.

Mokbel claims that sources have indicated that the deal is virtually done.

Arsenal need to bolster their midfield, either in January or next summer. Mikel Arteta needs to ship out players like Jorginho and Thomas Partey and bring in a top-class number six. Zubimendi fits the bill nicely.

The Real Sociedad star has been courted by the Gunners for the past 12 months. Ideally, Arsenal would like the midfielder to join immediately, but Sociedad have insisted that the player should stay with them for the rest of the season.

Manchester City are also interested in signing Zubimendi following the injury to Rodri.

Zubimendi has a €60million (£51m) release clause in his contract, and Arsenal are ready to trigger that in the summer. The 25-year-old is one of the top midfielders in European football at the moment, and it will be a huge coup for the club if they can sign him.

Having said that, Arsenal should turn their attention towards the present scenario. They are missing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus through injuries, and bolstering the forward department should be Arteta’s immediate priority.

According to a report from The Athletic, Arsenal can now try to expedite a deal for their long-term targets, such as RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko or Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao, or they will have to identify an alternative opportunity.

The Gunners can also look to sign players on loan in the January window but can only borrow players from clubs abroad, having used their domestic loan slots on Neto and Raheem Sterling.
