Aston Villa want to sign Oscar Mingueza after Donyell Malen deal

Aston Villa have not given up on the chase to sign Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza in the January transfer window.

The Villans are close to securing the signing of Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen after they have reached an agreement for him.

Villa have struck a deal in the region of €23 million million, plus €3m in add-ons to sign the Dutch attacker, and agreeing personal terms will not be an issue.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa could turn their attention next to signing Mingueza after securing the deal for Malen. They remain keen on the defender, but as of now, no formal bid has been made.

The transfer expert claims that Celta Vigo insist that Villa must pay the release clause, and that’s the only way they can allow Mingueza to leave in January.

The 25-year-old defender has a £16.6 million release clause, and he can be lured to Villa Park only by meeting that amount.

Villa are looking to sign a defender who can provide competition for Matty Cash, and Unai Emery has earmarked Mingueza for that role.

The Spanish international will shortly enter the final year of his contract at Celta Vigo, and Villa must decide whether they should pay the fee now and get him on board in January or make a concrete attempt in the summer window.

In any case, Villa will have to pay a similar fee in the summer unless the defender decide to sign a contract extension at the La Liga club.

Celta president Marian Mourino admitted that while the La Liga club do not want to lose Mingueza, but they would accept the reality if any potential club triggers Mingueza’s release clause.

Villa are looking to sign at least three players in the January window, as per the Daily Mail. Meanwhile, Jadon Philogene is expected to join Ipswich Town for £22 million, just six months after Villa re-signed him from Hull City.
