Celtic could allow Stephen Welsh to leave on loan

Celtic could allow defender Stephen Welsh to leave Parkhead on loan in the January transfer window, according to a report from Sky Sports

Belgian side KV Mechelen have registered an interest in the Hoops defender, and they have already tabled a formal bid to sign him.

The Daily Record recently reported that the Scottish champions are set to sanction the move. Welsh has struggled for regular game time under Brendan Rodgers, and the Celtics are ready to let him go and get back to playing regularly in the January window.

The 24-year-old started in the recent draw against Dundee United, but he is not expected to be in the side for the Old Firm clash against Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday night.

The Belgian club hope to sign Welsh in before their first game back from their winter break against Cercle Brugge on January 12.

Sky Sports claim that if Welsh leaves the club, Dane Murray could be recalled from his loan to fulfil the homegrown quota for the Champions League.

Who else could leave Celtic?

Welsh has come through the Celtic ranks, but he is at the stage of his career where he needs to play regularly.

Rodgers has Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty and Liam Scales all in front of him. Also, Maik Nawrocki still remains at the club, while Murray is set to return to satisfy the homegrown rule for Europe.

KV Mechelen have been trailing him since the summer, and it seems they are more likely to get him on loan in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports claim that German champions Bayer Leverkusen are interested in signing Carter-Vickers. He is a key player for the Bhoys and is very happy at Celtic Park.

It will take a really tempting offer to lure him away from the club.

Celtic outcast Odin Thiago Holm could leave the club in January and Los Angeles FC are finalising a loan deal for him.
