David Moyes is on the brink of a sensational return to Everton, with negotiations advancing rapidly between the Scottish manager and the club’s new owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG).
According to The Athletic, an official announcement could be made within 24 hours, with Moyes set to begin his second tenure with the Toffees.
TFG identified Moyes as their top candidate following Sean Dyche’s departure on Thursday. They see the 61-year-old as the ideal figure to stabilise the Merseyside club.
Ensuring Everton’s Premier League survival is their immediate priority, especially with the club’s high-profile move to the state-of-the-art Bramley-Moore Dock stadium looming.
Dyche’s dismissal came after a disappointing spell that culminated in a run of five league games without a win, leaving Everton teetering just one point above the relegation zone in 16th place.
His exit was confirmed just hours before the team’s FA Cup third-round clash against Peterborough.
Moyes, who has been out of work since leaving West Ham United at the end of last season, boasts a wealth of Premier League experience. His first spell at Everton from 2002 to 2013 is fondly remembered by supporters.
After departing Everton in 2013 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Moyes endured a turbulent period, but his managerial prowess remains unquestioned.
At West Ham, he delivered the club’s first major trophy in 43 years with a Europa Conference League triumph in 2022 and guided them to the Europa League quarter-finals last season.
However, many have questioned Everton’s ambitions following their move to return for Moyes. The managerial market is beaming with many exciting options, and their decision to swoop for their former boss is uninspiring.
Sacking Dyche for his pragmatic football is fine, but replacing him with an equally rigid taskmaster makes no sense. It is a sideways move with no potential upside.
