Liverpool forward Diogo Jota failed to shine in Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham

Liverpool fell to a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg tie.

The Reds headed to north London full of confidence, having not lost a single game in all competitions since the 1-0 reverse to Nottingham Forest in September.

However, Liverpool’s impressive run came to an end against Spurs after Lucas Bergvall’s late winner.

Although the 18-year-old’s goal wasn’t without controversy, as the visitors strongly believed he shouldn’t have been on the pitch to make the decisive contribution.

Bergvall was on a yellow card when he fouled Kostas Tsimikas late in an incident that went unnoticed by referee Stuart Attwell.

But despite the controversial goal, Liverpool players know they weren’t at their best in Wednesday’s game, and will be hoping to produce a better display when they welcome their rivals to Anfield next month.

Diogo Jota failed to shine vs Tottenham

Manager Arne Slot featured a strong team against Spurs yesterday, starting the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch.

But the Dutch boss also handed a big opportunity to Diogo Jota, who has mostly been limited to substitute appearances in recent months.

Jota could have used the fixture as a springboard to return to the starting XI, but he failed to impress with his performance.

His only involvement was a blocked shot on the stroke of half-time and was taken off on the hour-mark.

The 28-year-old had just 30 touches in the match and he lost possession on 11 occasions.

He committed two fouls and was dribbled past once, though he contributed a key pass and two tackles.

Jota has made 17 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring six goals in the process.
