Newcastle United are in talks with Portsmouth to offload midfielder Isaac Hayden in the January transfer window, according to Mike McGrath.
The Telegraph journalist wrote on X that several Championship clubs are also vying for the signature of the 29-year-old midfielder, who is almost certain to leave St James’ Park.
Hayden has become surplus to requirements at the club, and talks are ongoing over a deal to move to Fratton Park.
The midfielder, who is on £22k-per-week wages, joined Newcastle from Arsenal in the summer of 2016 and has made 171 appearances for the Magpies in all competitions.
Since the summer of 2022, he has been playing elsewhere on loan. He has spent time at Norwich City, Standard Liege and Queens Park Rangers, and it appears that his time at St James’ Park has truly come to an end.
Hayden has a contract at SJP until 2026. It is not clear whether Portsmouth want to sign him on loan or permanently. Newcastle would definitely want to sell him permanently, as he is not in Eddie Howe’s plans.
Who else could leave Newcastle United in January?
Hayden is one of the several players who could leave the club in January.
Newcastle are still trying to comply with the Premier League’s financial fair play rules and need to sell players to funds moves for new arrivals.

Martin Dubravka is almost certain to leave the club this month. The 35-year-old goalkeeper has reportedly reached personal agreements with Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab, and he is waiting for the green light from Newcastle to complete the move.
Another player who could leave the Tyneside club is defender Matt Targett. He was one of the players signed by Howe back in 2022.
The left-back initially joined on loan and later made the move permanent. He has made just one substitute appearance this season, and the Magpies are ready to sell him, with Frankfurt and Anderlecht being linked with a move.
