Newcastle United ready to offload Matt Targett in January

Newcastle United are ready to offload defender Matt Targett in the January transfer window, according to Alex Crook.

The transfer expert wrote on talkSPORT that the Magpies left-back is being targeted by Frankfurt and Anderlecht, and he is likely to leave St James’ Park.

The 29-year-old defender was signed by Eddie Howe in 2022. He initially joined on loan from Aston Villa in the January window, and later the move was made permanent.

However, he has managed only 27 appearances for the club since 2022-23 and has made just one substitute appearance this season.

The former Southampton defender is under contract until 2026, and the Magpies are open to offers.

Targett earns over £70,000-per-week and a loan exit is most likely with Newcastle contributing significantly to his wages.

His time at Tyneside has been blighted by injuries and loss of form, and the Magpies must look to offload him this month.

Newcastle need to offload players

The Magpies have picked up seven wins in a row, and they are one step closer to reaching the finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Arsenal 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Newcastle are also aiming to secure a top-four position this season, and Eddie Howe needs help to bolster the squad.

With the PSR threat still hanging over them, Newcastle must offload players to free up the space and wages for potential new arrivals.

Targett is not only the player who could leave in January. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is likely to depart as well.

He was in tears after the final whistle against the Gunners. Romano confirmed on X that Dubravka has an agreement in principle with Al Shabab over contract terms.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper is waiting for Newcastle’s final decision before joining the Saudi Pro League club.

Miguel Almiron and Isaac Hayden are also expected to leave the club this month.
