Newcastle United suffer big blow to sign Johan Bakayoko

Newcastle United have suffered a “big blow” to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko in the January transfer window.

The Magpies will be looking to bolster their squad in the January window, and they are desperate to sign a right-winger.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for players like Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo this month.

PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko is also another option, and he is seen as a dream signing for Toon boss Eddie Howe.

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror, Newcastle have suffered a “big blow” in their pursuit of their top winger target.

Bakayoko’s agent, Gerard Witters, said his client is going nowhere this month.

Witters said: “Bakayoko will not leave PSV this season, regardless of the amount.”

Liverpool and Arsenal are also keen to sign the 21-year-old, who turned down a £45million move to Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal.

Bakayoko has no interest in joining any mid-table Premier League sides, but Newcastle could be an attractive option for him next summer if the Magpies secure Champions League football this season.

Finance is a big issue for Newcastle United

Newcastle have one of the wealthiest owners in the world, but they cannot spend because of PSR threats. It restricted their business activity in the summer window, and a similar trend could continue in the January window as well.

Put simply, the Magpies need to sell players first to make room for new additions.

Bakayoko has made 14 appearances in the Eredivisie in 2024/25 and has scored five goals. He has also scored one goal and provided one assist in the Champions League.

The Belgian is an out-an-out right winger who is very good at passing, holding on to the ball, dribbling, finishing and crossing.

He would come at a reasonable price, but it seems the winger has no plans to leave the Dutch club any time soon, at least in the January window.
