Former Rangers hero Nikola Katic is ready to return to Ibrox in the January transfer window, according to a report from the Daily Record.
The Gers are currently going through a defensive crisis, and Philippe Clement is looking to sign one or two centre-backs in the winter market.
Rangers are down to the bare bones at the back, with John Souttar, Leon Balogun, Nana Kasanwirjo, and captain James Tavernier all currently out through injuries.
Katic has emerged as a potential target for the Bears this week after ex-Gers skipper Craig Moore – who now works as an agent – suggested the 28-year-old defender would be the perfect man to plug the gaps in the Rangers defence.
A source close to the player told Daily Record that Katic would love to return to Ibrox, but he has not received any concrete offers.
Katic plays for FC Zurich, where he still has 18 months remaining on the current deal. His agent is holding talks with several clubs, including from England, but Katic’s camp has made it clear that if Rangers knock on the door, he will move to Glasgow immediately.
Huge boost for Rangers – should they move for Nikola Katic?
Rangers need bodies at the back, and Katic would be a very good option. He is vastly experienced and knows the Scottish club very well.
He is pondering a January switch and could be set to quit the Swiss club this month. Rangers must not miss out on this opportunity.
Katic was signed by former Gers boss Steven Gerrard back in 2018. He quickly became a cult hero at the club, but his career at Ibrox was disrupted by a serious ACL injury.
He moved to Zurich in the summer of 2022 following a year on loan with Hajduk Split.
Katic has rediscovered his form while playing for the Swiss Super League club. He has switched his allegiance from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina and has been playing regularly for his country.
Rangers should try to get him on loan, as they are tight on finances. If the move works out well for him, then they can think about extending the deal in the summer.
