Rangers about to sign Rafael Fernandes in January transfer window

Philippe Clement’s Rangers are on the verge of signing Rafael Fernandes in the January transfer window.

That is according to Sky Sports, which has reported that Rangers are about to secure the services of Fernandes on a loan deal.

The 22-year-old central defender has reportedly arrived in Scotland, with talks between Rangers and his club Lille going on.

View: Rafael Fernandes could help Rangers

Rangers need to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window, and Fernandes could prove to be a good signing, especially on a loan deal.

Lille paid £2 million for Fernandes when they signed him from Portuguese side Arouca in January 2023 (Sky Sports).

The youngster has failed to make a single appearance in Ligue 1 for Lille, who clearly do think that he is ready.

The Scottish Premiership is not at the level of Ligue 1, but it is still a very competitive domestic league.

Fernandes would be determined to do well for Rangers and show Lille what he could be capable of.

John Souttar and Dujon Sterling are injured at the moment. Robin Propper is a doubt, while Neraysho Kasanwirjo, on loan from Feyenoord, will not play again this season.

With Rangers, who have been linked with former Ibrox player Nikola Katic, facing injury problems at the back, Fernandes would get the chance to make an immediate impact.

Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 47 points from 23 matches, as many as 13 points behind leaders and bitter rivals Celtic.

The Gers are eighth in the League Stage table in the UEFA Europa League with 11 points from six matches, five points behind leaders Lazio.

Rangers will take on Highland Football League club Fraserburgh at Ibrox in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Sunday before facing Premier League club Manchester United away from home at Old Trafford in the League Stage of the UEFA Europa League next Thursday.
