Chelsea will not sign a new goalkeeper this summer

The Chelsea hierarchy has decided they will not sign a new goalkeeper this summer, according to The Mirror.

The Blues started the season with Robert Sanchez between the sticks, but his poor distribution and five errors leading to goals forced Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca to drop him for summer signing Filip Jorgensen.

However, Jorgensen has not been an upgrade on Sanchez. The new Chelsea keeper is just as jittery and doesn’t command his box.

Against Aston Villa, he let a straightforward shot squirm under his arms and put what should have been an easy save back into a dangerous area as Chelsea beat Southampton.

Chelsea fans want a competent and reliable shot-stopper in their rearguard, but it appears the club has given a vote of confidence to Sanchez and Jorgensen.

The West Londoners also have the impressive Djordje Petrovic returning from his loan spell at Strasbourg, where he has caught the eyes.

Elsewhere, Kepa Arrizbalaga and Mike Penders are also returning from loan spells, although there is an understanding that the latter will replace Petrovic at Strasbourg.

This news report of the club sticking with Sanchez and Jorgensen will not surprise core Chelsea fans, who know the strong relationship between Head of Global Goalkeeping Ben Roberts and Sanchez.

Roberts is a father figure to Sanchez. The pair worked together at Brighton & Hove Albion. Roberts also played a crucial role in the signing of Jorgensen. Unsurprisingly, the club is backing his decisions.

Chelsea would be unwise not to sign a goalkeeper this summer, in our view. Sanchez and Jorgensen have been atrocious and should be shifted off the books permanently. They have shown nothing worth keeping them around for.

Meanwhile, Arrizabalaga must follow the pair out of the door as Penders develops his game at Strasbourg. This clear-out will leave Petrovic as the only trusted goalkeeper, meaning they should be in the market for a new number one.

Chelsea must not spend a massive sum to get a new, reliable option. OGC Nice keeper Marcin Bulka is arguably the best in Ligue 1 and will do an excellent job at Stamford Bridge. Interestingly, he came through the club’s Cobham Academy and will come cheap.
