Tottenham Hotspur suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Liverpool (4-1 in aggregate) in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal at Anfield on Thursday night.
Spurs won the first leg 1-0 and many had expected them to provide a tough competition at Anfield.
As it turned out, the visitors were totally outplayed, and Spurs failed to register a single shot on target throughout the game.
Son Heung-Min came close to scoring towards the end with a solo effort, but apart from that Spurs didn’t do enough to frustrate Liverpool.
Popular football pundit, Jamie Redknapp, said on Sky Sports that he is baffled by Ange Postecoglou’s tactics at Tottenham.
“The manager right now, he baffles me with his tactics sometimes,” said Redknapp.
“I think he’s completely lost it in what he’s trying to do. This is what I do. You’ve to adapt. You’ve to change. If you haven’t got the personnel you want, then you have to make sure your tactics are different.”
Tottenham missing several key players
Postecoglou has defended his team saying it is “really easy” for people to “stick their boots” into his team. Spurs are without a raft of key players at the moment, and the squad is depleted.
The likes of Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven missed Thursday’s defeat at Anfield, and there are two sides of the argument.
The Spurs has made it clear that he will not change his playing style and philosophy under any circumstance. He feels once his key players return from injuries, the squad will get better.
Could they have done differently to avoid so many defeats this season? Redknapp rightly points out that average teams have beaten Tottenham quite easily this season, and that is why they are badly struggling in the Premier League.
Spurs will face Aston Villa in their next game at Villa Park on Sunday in the FA Cup.
