Preview: Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt – H2H, Best XIs, line-ups

Bayern Munich will be looking to consolidate their place at the Bundesliga summit when they take on Eintracht Frankfurt at the Allianz Arena on February 23.

Both sides know how to put on a show for both fans and neutrals, so there’s a bubbling anticipation for another nerve-racking contest in Bavaria.

Bayern appear to be running away with the title. At this stage, it’ll take the mother of all capitulations for Vincent Kompany’s side to end the season empty-handed.

Meanwhile, Frankfurt are in a fierce battle to secure Champions League football and will relish another go at the perennial champions.

As things stand, Bayern have won their last seven consecutive games in the league, opening up a massive eight-point lead at the Bundesliga summit.

After relinquishing their crown to Bayer Leverkusen last season, the Bavarians are on course to reclaim their place as kings of the Bundesliga.

However, there’s still some way to go this season, so they can’t afford even a hint of complacency, even though the chasing pack are barely putting up a fight.

Despite retaining the core of the squad that achieved the unbelievable ‘invincibles’ feat last term, Leverkusen have fallen off and may have to settle for a runners-up spot this season.

They won’t give up the fight until the last day, but the title is Bayern’s to lose, although defeat against Frankfurt could give the champions some hope of defending their crown.

Frankfurt are flying high under Dino Toppmoller’s watch this season and sit third in the table as things stand.

They’re strong contenders for a top-four finish and will be hoping to build up a head of steam with a strong run of results ahead of their giant-slaying task in Bavaria later this month.

Head to Head

Unlike virtually every other side in the German top flight, Frankfurt will not be intimidated by the prospect of taking on the record Bundesliga champions.

Die Adler’s record against Bayern is far from dominant, but they know how to make life difficult for the Bavarians.

Bayern have won just one of their last four league meetings with Frankfurt (D2, L1). Die Adler fans will fondly remember their spectacular 5-1 thrashing of Die Roten in December 2023.

Bayern responded with a 2-1 win – their only victory over the four-game period – but were forced to work hard for a single point in the last meeting.

There were plenty of fireworks in the reverse fixture at Deutsche Bank Park back in October, with both sides playing out an astonishing 3-3 draw.

Frankfurt nicked a point off the perennial champions thanks to a last-gasp effort from Omar Marmoush – now at Manchester City – and will fancy their chances of having another go at Kompany’s side.

Best XIs

Bayern

Kompany will be hoping for a clean bill of health in the build-up to the tricky game against Frankfurt, as Bayern will need every weapon they can muster to get all three points.

The legendary Manuel Neuer will be tasked with keeping Frankfurt at bay, supported by a back four of Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-Jae, Raphael Guerreiro, and Konrad Laimer.

Joao Palhinha may still be working on his fitness, so Aleksandar Pavlovic and Leon Goretzka will vie for the vacant spot next to Joshua Kimmich at the base of midfield.

Kompany is spoiled for choice in the forward areas, but he seems to have settled on a reliable attacking quartet with any tweak likely to come on the left flank.

Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry are all decent options to join Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise in the attacking roles behind the free-scoring Harry Kane.

The England captain has been in lethal form this season. He would be keen to have surpassed the 30-goal mark by the time Frankfurt visit Bavaria.

(4-2-3-1): Neuer; Guerreiro, Upamecano, Min-Jae, Laimer; Goretzka, Kimmich; Coman, Musiala, Olise; Kane.

Frankfurt

Toppmoller has alternated between a 4-4-2 and a 3-4-2-1 set-up this season, but his tactical flexibility has worked a treat, helping Frankfurt challenge for Champions League qualification.

Getting the better of Bayern would be a massive step towards realising their lofty ambitions.

Luckily for Toppmoller, Die Adler knows a thing or two about giant slaying, but he’d still need to put out a strong team to bolster his chances of bringing the leaders to their knees.

Kevin Trapp has been one of the better goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season. He’d be the last line of defence behind a back three of Arthur Theate, Tuta, and Nnamdi Collins.

A midfield pairing of Ellyes Skhiri and Hugo Larsson will look to provide control in the middle of the park, with Rasmus Kristensen and Nathaniel Brown slotting in as wingbacks.

Former Borussia Dortmund duo Angsnar Knauff and Mario Gotze will be looking to do damage from the number 10 role, with the towering Hugo Ekitike leading the line.

(3-4-2-1): Trapp; Collins, Tuta, Theate; Kristensen, Skhiri, Larsson, Brown; Gotze, Knauff; Ekitike.
