Preview: Chelsea vs West Ham United – stats, team news, line-ups

Stamford Bridge forms the backdrop for Monday night football as Chelsea welcome Graham Potter back to West London for their London derby showdown against West Ham United.

Enzo Maresca’s troops fell on their sword against Manchester City in their last outing despite being gifted a chance to take the game.

Meanwhile, Potter’s troops took a point from Aston Villa following a 1-1 draw, although they’ll feel they should have taken all three, given how the game panned out.

Monday’s London derby promises to be an entertaining, end-to-end affair, so Chelsea tickets are poised to sell out quickly on Seatsnet.com, with fans eager to see the Blues get back to winning ways on home turf.

Match Preview

Chelsea came within touching distance of completing an unbeaten January, but their hopes were dashed by a relentless City side at the Etihad Stadium.

With two wins and two draws to start the year, the Blues had steadied a turbulent run of form, and when Abdukodir Khusanov’s error allowed Nicolas Jackson to set up Noni Madueke for the opener, they dared to dream of an upset.

However, City’s pressure was relentless, and just before halftime, Josko Gvardiol struck to bring the hosts level.

In the second half, City picked up where they left off, exposing Chelsea’s defensive weaknesses again.

Erling Braut Haaland pounced on an error from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to nudge the Cityzens ahead.

The Norwegian striker then set up Phil Foden to seal a 3-1 comeback victory for the reigning champions.

The defeat added weight to Maresca’s claim that Chelsea are not genuine title contenders.

In fact, even securing a top-seven finish is far from certain, with Aston Villa and Bournemouth posing serious competition.

While the loss at the Etihad was Chelsea’s only defeat in their last five matches, their overall form remains inconsistent.

They have won just one of their last seven league games despite scoring first in five of their previous six.

Chelsea’s inability to protect narrow leads has been their Achilles’ heel this season, and defensive lapses have been incredibly costly at Stamford Bridge.

They have conceded in ten of their 11 home league games. If they are to salvage European hopes, tightening up at the back must be a priority.

Meanwhile, Potter returns to the Bridge with one eye on a feat no former Chelsea boss has managed – beating the Blues at their own headquarters in the Premier League.

The Hammers come into the game on the back of a solid away scoring run – they’ve scored in their last seven matches on the road across all competitions.

Their recent encounter with Aston Villa saw them fall behind early to Jacob Ramsey’s eighth-minute strike.

However, an unfortunate injury to Tyrone Mings shifted the momentum, allowing West Ham to rally.

Emerson Palmieri’s well-placed header secured a point, but Tomas Soucek came agonisingly close to snatching a winner in a similar move as the one that brought the equaliser.

Despite their resilience, West Ham’s record against Chelsea leaves much to be desired.

Their last two meetings ended in heavy defeats – a humbling 3-0 loss at home in September and a crushing 5-0 defeat at the Bridge towards the end of the 2023/24 season.

This fixture carries extra weight for Potter, who will feel he has a score to settle against his former employers.

His tenure at Chelsea started with promise in 2022 but ended in disappointment after just 31 games. Now leading West Ham, he has the chance to make history against his former club.

The Blues have struggled defensively, managing just one clean sheet in their last 11 games. Potter’s troops must capitalise on Chelsea’s weaknesses if they’re to make history at the Bridge on Monday night.

Key Stats

Chelsea will be looking to extend their recent dominance over West Ham United when the two sides meet at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have won their last two Premier League encounters with the Hammers by an emphatic aggregate score of 8-0.

Another victory would mark the first time Chelsea have won three consecutive league meetings against West Ham since 2010/11.

However, despite their recent success in this fixture, Chelsea’s inconsistent form is a huge sticking point.

Since Christmas, they have scored first in five of their six league games but have won just once (D2, L2).

Only Tottenham Hotspur (11) have dropped more points from winning positions than Maresca’s side (10) during this period.

Meanwhile, the Bridge hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for West Ham.

The Hammers have won just once in their last 18 Premier League trips to Chelsea (D4, L13).

You’d have to go back to November 2019 for the last time they left the Bridge with a win, but since then, they’ve lost four straight visits.

It’ll be interesting to see how both sides start the game.

West Ham have conceded nine goals within the first ten minutes of Premier League games this season, more than any other team.

On the other hand, Chelsea have been fast starters, netting five early goals – only Brentford (6) have netted more in that timeframe.

To spice things up even further, this will be Potter’s first game against Chelsea since his unceremonious exit in April 2023.

History is not on his side, though, as none of the eight former Chelsea managers who have faced the Blues at the Bridge in the Premier League have won across 22 games (D8, L14).

One player to watch is Nicolas Jackson, who has netted 11 goals in his last 14 London derby appearances – more than any other player in such matches over the past two seasons.

Team News

Maresca will be without Mykhaylo Mudryk, Omari Kellyman, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, and Benoit Badiashile.

The Italian has a big decision to make regarding who starts in goal.

Sanchez has now made five errors leading to a goal this season, so Maresca could hand Jorgensen his first Premier League start at home.

Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen is fit to face Chelsea in a huge boost to Potter, although he’d still be without Crysencio Summerville, Michail Antonio, Niclas Fullkrug, and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Chelsea potential starting line-up:

(4-2-3-1): Filip Jorgensen; Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella; Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez; Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto; Nicolas Jackson.

West Ham United potential starting line-up:

(3-4-2-1): Alphonse Areola; Vladimir Coufal, Max Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tomas Soucek, Edson Alvarez, Emerson Palmieri; Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus; Jarrod Bowen.
