Preview: Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur – H2H, Best XIs, How to Watch & More

Liverpool perch comfortably atop the Premier League table and need two wins from their remaining six games to secure the title.

The Reds welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on April 27, looking to close the deal.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are fighting to save face. Spurs languish in 15th place on the table after losing 17 league games.

All the North Londoners can do is try to salvage a more respectable position, but their atrocious form means it is easier said than done.

Liverpool are limping towards a first Premier League title since 2020.

They were imperious for most of the season, even enjoying a 26-game unbeaten run in the English top flight, but they seemed to lose steam.

Losses to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League and Newcastle United in the League Cup left the team deflated.

That loss of momentum seeped into their Premier League campaign as they barely scraped through Everton, lost to Fulham, and needed a dying-minute goal to edge a mediocre West Ham United.

Thankfully, they are too far ahead in the title race for Arsenal to catch them, and it is now a matter of when, not if, they can get their hands on the trophy.

As for Spurs, they were expected to be in the battle for one of the top four spots but find themselves in the bottom half in what has been a forgettable campaign.

The blame is enough to go around – Daniel Levy for his continued presence at the club, the recruitment team for unambitious signings, the manager Ange Postecoglou for his stubbornness, and the players for lacking fight.

Tottenham must avoid another embarrassing outing when they travel to Anfield later this month. They must fight for a decent result, especially after the 6-3 humiliation in the reverse fixture.

These teams always produce fireworks when they meet. With so much at stake, it should deliver again.

Match Preview

Liverpool manager Arne Slot adeptly stepped out of Jurgen Klopp’s shadow to lead the Reds to only their second Premier League title.

One significant reason for his success was that he did not tear up the Klopp playbook but added his modifications like refinement in possession and more control in the engine room.

Liverpool have lost only two Premier League games this season.

The Merseysiders are 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal while having the best attack and second-best defence. They have been dominant and deserve their spot at the summit.

However, the Fulham game showed they have weaknesses that can be exploited.

The usually solid defence has been brittle, with Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Andy Roberts looking susceptible.

Tottenham have the personnel to capitalise on any perceived weakness, but Liverpool will back themselves to come out on top, partly because Spurs have been woeful in every facet.

Tottenham are coming off a 4-2 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. They have recorded only one win in their last six league outings (L4, D1).

The team is underperforming across the board. Where to start?

Big-money summer signing Dominic Solanke has seven goals this season, Son Heung-min is physically declining, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario looks rusty, and James Maddison remains wildly inconsistent.

The Tottenham midfield lacks steel, and the defence has been blighted by injuries. Their recent performances have been listless.

However, the fear of a mullering at Anfield might galvanise Spurs to raise their game.

Head to Head

The history books overwhelmingly favour Liverpool over Tottenham. Spurs have won only three of their last 21 meetings with Liverpool across all competitions (L14, D4).

Liverpool have won seven of their last 10 Premier League clashes (L1, D2).

The Reds have won 92 of the 186 competitive games between the two clubs, suffering 50 defeats, while 44 matches ended in a stalemate.

However, Tottenham took the fight to Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final match earlier this year and won. Slot’s side rallied to edge Spurs at Anfield.

Best XIs

Liverpool

Barring any injuries, Alisson Becker should be in goal with the mainstay backline of Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently returned from a minor setback.

The Liverpool midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch at the base, with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in more advanced positions, has been solid.

The recruitment team will have to bolster that area ahead of next season.

The frontline of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah has blown teams out of the park this season. They will cause Tottenham all sorts of problems.

(4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, Alexander-Arnold; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Gakpo, Diaz, Salah.

Tottenham

Vicario should keep his place despite his atrocious keeping against Wolves, with Pedro Porro, Micky van den Ven, Cristian Romero, and Destiny Udogie protecting him.

In midfield, James Maddison and the precocious Lucas Bergvall will play just ahead of Rodrigo Bentancur in the anchor position.

Spurs hope to have captain Son back fit and raring to go after his foot injury. Brennan Johnson runs the rule on the opposite flank, with Solanke leading the line.

(4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Van den Ven, Romero, Udogie; Bentancur, Bergvall; Son, Maddison, Johnson; Solanke.
