Preview: Manchester City vs Aston Villa – stats, team news, line-ups

Etihad Stadium forms the backdrop for this week’s Premier League contest as Manchester City go head-to-head with Aston Villa in a crucial top-five six-pointer.

Both sides are still in the hunt for a top-five finish, which is now enough to secure a place in the Champions League.

The additional spot offers some breathing room, but the pressure is still at an all-time high.

Form and momentum are vital at this stage, and both sides come into this game knowing that a win could be the difference between glory and disappointment.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, so it’s no surprise that Manchester City tickets have become highly sought after on Seatsnet.com.

Fans heading to the game can expect an end-to-end battle at the Etihad as the race for Europe heats up.

Match Preview

Both sides took a huge leap towards a top-five finish after last weekend’s round of games. City dispatched an in-form Everton side with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.

Although they cut it too close as late goals from Nico O’Reilly and Mateo Kovacic salvaged a crucial win.

That result closed the gap on third-placed Newcastle United, who were dealt a massive blow in the race as they were beaten by Villa.

City’s unreplied win against Everton was the third time they’ve kept a clean sheet in their last four games.

Pep Guardiola’s troops have picked up 10 points in that stretch, and shoring up the backline has been key to their uptick in form.

It was also a breath of fresh air, considering City have already conceded 21 goals at home this season – their worst record since 2003/04 with three games to spare.

Defensive woes or not, the Etihad is still a fortress. A lot of teams have tried to buck the trend, but only Liverpool and Real Madrid have come away with a win this year.

Villa are next in line, but their awful record in Manchester gives City the upper hand.

The last 14 meetings in a row between these two sides at the Etihad have ended in a win for City.

Only Newcastle United have suffered more consecutive defeats at the home of the champions (16).

The last time Villa left the Etihad with a win was in 2007. That was before a new ownership led City into a new era.

But Villa may not have a better opportunity to snap that streak.

They’ve already beaten City once this season, winning 2-0 at Villa Park back in December, so they will fancy their chances.

The prospect of completing a league double over City for the first time in six decades should also provide Unai Emery’s side with plenty of fuel.

Villa’s win in the reverse fixture was their second in three duels with City.

Before then, they’d managed just two wins in their previous 23 meetings, so they should take on the champions brimming with confidence.

Emery’s side could not head into this duel in better shape on the back of a thumping 4-1 win against Newcastle.

The game started off as a closely contested battle between two sides desperate for Champions League football, but Villa switched gears towards the final half an hour.

That result brought them within two points of the conquered Magpies and just one behind their next opponents.

Villa are in blistering form. They’ve won 10 of their last 11 games in all competitions.

The only blemish was a thumping defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

That uptick in form has bolstered their domestic ambitions and placed them on course for a potential Champions League return next season.

Villa are also flying away from home. Three consecutive Premier League wins on the road without conceding is their best run in over 16 years.

If they go one more, it would mark an unprecedented feat in their top-flight history, although that’s easier said than done against the champions.

The only problem with that is that Villa have struggled at the home of some of the top teams this season.

They’ve only picked up one point from five such games, and the Etihad will be the ultimate test of their Champions League ambitions.

Key Stats

City’s defence has been surprisingly leaky this season. Their 21 goals conceded at home is the most since 2015/16. The last time they conceded more was in 2003/04 when they shipped in 24.

They’ve looked uncharacteristically vulnerable on their own patch, but they’re making up for it at the top end of the pitch.

City have made a habit of turning on the style in April. They’ve won each of their last nine home Premier League matches this month, scoring 35 and conceding just eight.

Not since Leeds United snatched a shock 2-1 victory in April 2021 has any side left the Etihad with three points during this period.

In 2025 alone, the Cityzens have netted 36 goals in 11 home games across all competitions, scoring two or more in 10 of those matches.

With an impressive average of 3.27 goals per game, it’s their fourth-best scoring rate in a calendar year – only topped in 1898, 1895, and the treble-winning 2019 campaign.

Villa’s awful record at the Etihad is well documented, but what will worry Emery more is that they’ve only taken the lead twice in that 14-game losing streak (2010 & 2022).

It didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things as City came back to win both times, but they’d be hoping their electric run of form set the tone for a resurgence.

Villa’s last two away wins – 3-0 triumphs over Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton – equal the number of three-goal victories they had across their previous 84 away games.

They’ve never done it in three away top-flight games in a row.

Team News

While Kovacic is gearing up for his 200th Premier League appearance, Guardiola will be making plans without Ederson, Rodri, Nathan Ake, Erling Braut Haaland, and John Stones.

Meanwhile, Villa have just one injury worry, and it concerns Pau Torres, who was left out of the squad at the weekend with a minor issue.
