Wimbledon 2025 – Men’s singles –Alcaraz & Sinner on course for epic showdown
Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz breezed into the third round courtesy of a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Oliver Tarvet on Centre Court.
Progressing in straight sets was a relief for Alcaraz, who was taken to a decider by Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in his opening match.
The Spaniard will fancy his chances of making another deep run at Wimbledon, having won the men’s singles title in each of the last two years.
His most likely opponent in the final is Jannik Sinner, who cruised into the second round after beating Luca Nardi 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.
The top two seeds have won the last six Grand Slams between them, and it would be a brave move to back any other players to topple them at Wimbledon.
Sinner returned to competitive tennis at the Italian Open in May after serving a three-month suspension for a doping violation.
Many critics feel the ban was lenient, and the crowd at the All-England Club gave the Italian player a lukewarm reception throughout his opening match.
However, he is undoubtedly the biggest threat to Alcaraz’s hopes of winning a sixth career Grand Slam and his third in a row at Wimbledon.
Jack Draper, Taylor Fritz and Novak Djokovic could be dangerous, but the top two seeds are fancied to contest the final on Sunday, July 13.

Wimbledon 2025 – Women’s singles – Sabalenka will never have a better chance of success
Six of the top 16 seeds have fallen by the wayside in the men’s singles, while seven of the top 16 have exited the women’s tournament.
With only Aryna Sabalenka remaining out of the top five seeds, she will never have a better chance of breaking her duck at the All-England Club.
The Belarusian won the Australian Open and United States Open in 2024, but has never progressed beyond the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
The 27-year-old was defeated in the finals of both Grand Slams this year, losing to Madison Keys at the Australian Open and Coco Gauff at the French Open.
Sabalenka will face Emma Raducanu in the third round. The 2021 US Open winner has looked in good nick up to this point and could give Sabalenka plenty to think about.
Elena Rybakina is rated as the biggest threat to Sabalenka by the bookmakers, and she could be the value bet to overcome the world number one.
The 2022 Wimbledon champion swatted aside Elina Avanesyan in her opening match and looks set to make another deep run in the tournament.
She reached the quarter-finals in 2023 and followed up with a semi-final appearance last year, highlighting her affinity for a grass court surface.
With plenty of top seeds already eliminated from the women’s singles, the path could be clear for Rybakina to make more headlines at Wimbledon.
