Chelsea have a deal set up to sign Leipzig star Xavi Simons

Chelsea have a deal set up to sign Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, according to journalist Matt Law.

The Blues had been chasing the 22-year-old attacking midfielder for some time, but it looked like nothing was forthcoming.

However, the youngster tipped to become ‘a great player’ will move after Leipzig’s Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich this weekend.

Simons is a versatile playmaker who can excel off the left wing, as a number ten or as a deeper central midfielder.

He has already started the current campaign with a bang, netting a goal and providing an assist as Leipzig beat SV Sandhausen in their DFB-Pokal clash.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona starlet would be another effective offensive weapon for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Most of Chelsea’s recent transfer talk has centred around whether they should sign another centre-back following the injury to Levi Colwill.

However, Chelsea lacked inventiveness and cutting edge in the final third in their season opener against Crystal Palace. Simons will help solve that problem.

As for the defensive situation, Chelsea do not need a new centre-back with Josh Acheampong showing he is more than ready to step up.

The youngster delivered an assured performance against Palace. With Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr waiting in the wings, Maresca has enough options.
