Preview: Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig – H2H, Best XIs, How to Watch & More

Bayern Munich begin their Bundesliga title defence with a tricky visit from RB Leipzig on Friday, August 22.

The champions, fresh from snatching the Meisterschale back from Bayer Leverkusen, are keen on keeping the title in Bavaria. That charge starts with taking down Leipzig at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern have been in blistering form in pre-season, decimating anything in their path and sending warning signals to Bundesliga rivals that they are ready to defend their crown.

However, Leipzig presents a tricky test for Vincent Kompany’s side. New manager Ole Werner arrived with the task of transforming Die Roten Bullen, and we are yet to see his side in competitive action.

Leipzig are a bit of an unknown quantity right now, and that could work to their advantage.

Pre-season results have been encouraging, but coming up against fierce adversaries like Bayern is a different ball game.

Will Leipzig be able to take the game to Bayern on enemy territory and distort their early momentum?

The champions were exciting to watch last season, and fans will hope for more of the same as they explore available tickets for Bayern Munich games on Seatsnet.com.

Match Preview

Bayern relinquished the Bundesliga title for the first time in 11 years in 2023/24 as Leverkusen pipped them to the German top-flight crown.

Die Rekordmeister hired Kompany to lead them back to the top of the pile.

Although he did not seem the most qualified for the job, given the club’s recent dismissal of top coaches like Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann, the Belgian rose to the occasion.

Bayern bosses did not want a reactionary team. They wanted a fierce attacking force that overpowered opponents, and Kompany, with his gung-ho style, fit the mould.

Kompany brought fresh ideas and made Bayern a feared attacking outfit again, on their way to the Bundesliga crown.

They were exciting to watch, giving fans who followed them a thrill. Bayern are a more well-rounded side going into next season.

With the addition of Luis Diaz, Jonathan Tah, and Tom Bischof, they are stronger, and they still plan to sign reinforcements before the close of the window.

Bayern will be hard to stop next season. However, Bundesliga rivals like Leipzig cannot afford to fear.

As Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain demonstrated at the Club World Cup, Bayern’s team has its weaknesses and Leipzig can exploit them.

Die Roten Bullen are coming off a disappointing season where they failed to secure a place in Europe after giving an embarrassing account of themselves in the Champions League.

The dip in form affected several Leipzig players, and the hierarchy decided to part ways with Marco Rose and bring in Werner, who had done a respectable job at Werder Bremen.

Leipzig refreshed the squad for the 37-year-old, giving him young, exciting stars like Yan Diomande, Johan Bakayoko, Ezechiel Banzuzi, Andrija Maksimovic and Max Finkgrafe. Striker Romulo is also on the way.

It might not be enough to challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga, but they can make life difficult for the champions if Werner manages to galvanise them.

Head to Head

Bayern blew Leipzig out of the water the last time they locked horns in Bavaria, sealing a 5-1 victory over the hapless visitors.

Benjamin Sesko scored in the second minute, but his goal awoke the sleeping behemoths. Leipzig were on the end of a thorough mauling that was the beginning of the end for Rose.

Still, Leipzig cannot afford to cower. Before that loss, they had stunned Bayern at the Allianz Arena in 2023, with late penalties from Dominik Szoboszlai and Christopher Nkunku sealing the 3-1 victory.

Over the past five league meetings between Bayern and Leipzig, the Bavarians have come out on top twice, with Die Roten Bullen winning once (D2).

Across the previous 10, Bayern remain the dominant force, winning five match-ups.

It’s just the one win for Leipzig (D4). They have recorded only two victories in their 18 Bundesliga games against the champions. Leipzig have a massive mountain to surmount, but they must hold faith.

Team News

Bayern trio Aleksandar Pavlovic, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito might be training on the pitch, but all three will miss the first few games of the season.

Also, playmaker Jamal Musiala is still on the treatment table and remains months away from a return to action.

Bayern are considering entering the market for a short-term replacement for the German international.

Meanwhile, Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs is steadily advancing in his recovery from the Achilles tendon rupture he sustained in December 2024. The right-back has returned to light work on the training pitch.

Tidiam Gomis, sidelined by a ligament injury to his left ankle early in pre-season, is also undergoing rehabilitation in Leipzig. Andrija Maksimovic continues to train individually.

Best XIs

Bayern should go 4-3-3 against Leipzig, with the legendary Manuel Neuer as the guardian after refusing to give up his starting berth despite a notable decline.

Sacha Boey, Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae and Raphael Guerreiro form the back line, with Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Bischof in midfield.

Electrifying wing duo Michael Olise and Luis Diaz flank the talismanic Harry Kane in attack.

Predicted Line-Up:

Leipzig will likely line up against Bayern with Belgian starlet Maarten Vandevoordt in goal, a back four of Kosta Nedeljkovic, Castello Lukeba, Willy Orban and David Raum.

Antonio Nusa and Xavi Simons (if he is still around) handle business out wide, with Xavier Schlager and Arthur Vermeeren anchoring midfield.
