Rangers lost 6-0 to Club Brugge in Belgium tonight, suffering one of their heaviest defeats in Europe.
Rangers headed into the second leg of their Champions League play-off with a 3-1 deficit to overcome, but manager Russell Martin was hoping for a comeback.
However, after conceding an early goal, Max Aarons complicated matters as he was shown a straight red card.
The visitors were 5-0 down by half-time, and they conceded the sixth goal five minutes after the restart.
BBC Sport Scotland’s chief sports writer, Tom English, was not impressed with Martin and his men.
“Even before the red card, this was a shocking Rangers performance,” English said. “Martin is clueless – he’s just not up to it.
“You can’t ignore this. This is screaming that this guy is not good enough. He’s a fast talker, but there’s no substance to it. It’s a total humiliation.”
Rangers faced 32 shots tonight and could have conceded more goals had goalkeeperJack Butland not made some decent saves.
Their heaviest ever defeat came against Liverpool in a Champions League game in October 2022, with the Premier League giants running out 7-1 winners at Ibrox.
Rangers made Club Brugge look like the best team on the planet tonight, and Martin could struggle to recover from this result.
An underwhelming start to the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership campaign has not helped matters, with the club still searching for their first win after three draws.
They return to action on Sunday when they host reigning champions Celtic, and a defeat could spell the end of Martin’s Rangers reign – if he is still in charge by then.
