West Ham United reignite interest in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor

West Ham United have reignited interest in Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

They were close to signing the Brazilian before manager Graham Potter opted to bring Mads Hermansen to the London Stadium instead.

The Hammers conceded eight goals in their opening two Premier League games of 2025-26 and are now looking to sign Victor.

A €10 million deal was agreed in principle for the South American before the deal fell through, and they are now working on a loan with an option to buy.

Hermansen is not solely to blame for the 3-0 defeat to Sunderland or the 5-1 loss against Chelsea, but he could have saved some of the goals.

West Ham wanted an upgrade on Alphonse Areola, but Hermansen has failed to prove that he has what it takes to impress in goal.

Eight goals represent the most West Ham have conceded in their two opening games of a top-flight campaign, and Potter is under pressure following the poor start to the season.

West Ham’s goalkeeping coach, Casper Ankergren, worked with Hermansen at Danish club Brondby, and he played a key role in his signing.

The reunion is not going as planned, and his Botafogo counterpart has emerged as a serious target as the Hammers look to rescue their season.

Hermansen has not exuded confidence since joining West Ham, and his mental strength, positioning, concentration and organisation have been questionable.

Victor caught the eye at the Club World Cup in the summer, and he is one of the most in-form goalkeepers in South America.

The Hammers have identified him as someone capable of impressing following the struggles of their new signing, and a deal could be completed in the coming days.
