The Winter Olympic Games will be one of the highlights of the early part of the year. It features 116 medal events in 16 winter sports disciplines.

The International Cricket Council T20 World Cup will also garner plenty of headlines when it is staged in India and Sri Lanka in February and the early part of March.

Horse racing fans will be in their element in March when the 2026 Cheltenham Festival takes place. The standout race is the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the final day.

Football supporters also have plenty to look forward to next year, including the FIFA World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada in June and July.

The prestigious international tournament features 48 teams for the first time, giving smaller nations more opportunities to showcase their talents on the biggest stage.

European champions Spain are the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the trophy, and it would be a brave move to bet against them achieving the feat.

Brazil, Argentina, France and Germany are among the other teams that will fancy their chances of emerging victorious in the 23rd edition of the World Cup.

England will also be well-supported by sports bettors, but their tendency to underperform in major tournaments makes them a risky wagering proposition.

Looking towards the end of the year, the PDC World Darts Championship is guaranteed to provide plenty of thrilling moments over the festive period.

Luke Littler and Luke Humphries will likely be amongst the leading contenders, while Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen could challenge for the title.
