Manchester United have plans to go big in their bid to recruit in midfield in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have announced that Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season, and they are identifying prospective targets ahead of the next transfer window.
Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka is reportedly not currently on their radar. He is out of contract at the end of the season and will not be short of suitors when he becomes a free agent.
Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson have all been linked with Man United.
While Romano did not mention any of them in his transfer update on YouTube today, the club are expected to go after at least one of them.
“Leon Goretzka will leave Bayern Munich as a free agent this summer and will have plenty of options,” Romano said.
“My understanding is that Manchester United will go very big for midfielders in the summer – trust me, very big.
“They could sign one or maybe two midfielders. United will go very strong for midfielders. Casemiro is leaving, but at the moment, I am not aware of anything advanced for Goretzka.”
Whoever is the manager heading into next season will determine which midfielders will be signed.
Interim boss Michael Carrick will hope to do enough to earn a permanent deal after replacing Ruben Amorim until the end of the season.
The Red Devils are now expected to hold on to Kobbie Mainoo after Carrick brought him back into the starting XI, which could result in them going for just one midfielder in the summer.
