T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka beat Australia by eight wickets

Sri Lanka defeated Australia by eight wickets to put the tournament favourites on the brink of World Cup elimination.

Pathum Nissanka was the standout performer for the Lions as the 27-year-old hit a brilliant century off just 52 balls with the help of ten boundaries and five sixes.

The result has guaranteed their qualification for the Super Eights but leaves Australia on the brink of an early exit.

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

Openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh came out firing on all cylinders as they gave Australia a perfect platform to score a big total.

Marsh, who was playing his first match of the tournament, hit a blistering 54 off 27 with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Travis Head was equally explosive with the bat as he scored 56 at a strike rate of almost 200.

Dushan Hemantha dismissed Head in the ninth over to halt their momentum.

More wickets tumbled, but with Glenn Maxwell and Josh Inglis on the crease, a score above 200 appeared easily within reach.

However, Nissanka pulled off a spectacular catch to remove Maxwell after dropping a sitter.

Australia really struggled to accelerate in the final overs and reached only 181 in the end.

Sri Lanka were jolted early in the chase, as Kusal Perera departed after scoring just one run. Nissanka and Kusal Mendis wrested back control by building a solid partnership.

The duo didn’t take any unnecessary risks and also maintained a healthy run rate.

Australia hunted desperately for a wicket and finally made a breakthrough when Marcos Stoinis got rid of Mendis in the 13th over.

Nissanka and Pavan Rathnayake stayed on the pitch to guide them to a comfortable victory.
