Sunderland stunned Newcastle United with an excellent 2-1 victory on Sunday after a 90th-minute goal from Brian Brobbey.
Brobbey’s first shot was denied by Aaron Ramsdale, but he hit the target with the rebound, sparking huge celebrations for the away supporters at St James’ Park.
Confidence was low in the Newcastle camp after a chastening 7-2 defeat at Barcelona in midweek that ended their Champions League involvement.
However, Eddie Howe’s side made a positive start to the derby and got their opening goal in the first 10 minutes.
In their attempt to play out from the back, Luke O’Nien passed the ball straight to Nick Woltemade, who found Anthony Gordon to slot past the goalkeeper.
Chemsdine Talbi threatened to equalise with a sensational strike just outside the box, but Ramsdale denied him.
Sunderland came out playing with more purpose and energy after the break, and their efforts were rewarded.
Talbi struck a 58th-minute equaliser when the ball fell to him after Brobbey’s attempt was blocked by Dan Burn.
Howe made a triple change by bringing on Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock for Kieran Trippier, Anthony Elanga and Woltemade.
Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the effort was disallowed as Murphy was blocking off Melker Ellborg.
Brobbey stunned the home supporters by grabbing a late winner.
Newcastle were looking for revenge against their bitter rivals after losing the reverse fixture in December, when Woltemade inexplicably sent a header into his own net.
However, Magpies suffered another disappointing defeat after a brilliant second-half comeback from Sunderland.
The result leaves them 12th in the Premier League table, with one point behind the Black Cats.
