What are the biggest upsets in T20 World Cup history?

Zimbabwe pulled off a massive T20 World Cup shock when they defeated Australia by 23 runs last month

Blessing Muzarabani was the star performer for the Chevrons, with the 29-year-old claiming four wickets and conceding just 17 runs in his four overs.

The victory helped Zimbabwe qualify for the Super Eights, which looked improbable at the start of the tournament.

We look at the three biggest upsets in the history of the T20 World Cup.

United States vs Pakistan (2024)

The United States stunned Pakistan in 2024 when they sealed a shocking victory at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium.#

The US restricted the Green Shirts to 159 after opting to bowl first. Pakistan were reeling at 26-3, but recovered to post a decent total after Babar Azam and Shadab Khan scored 44 and 40 respectively.

The US were on course for an easy win when they needed just 56 from seven overs with nine wickets in hand.

However, Pakistan made a comeback to force the super over, where they should have prevailed. Mohammad Amir conceded 18 runs in the super over, and the batsmen managed to score only 13 in reply.

Afghanistan vs West Indies (2016)

West Indies defeated England, Sri Lanka, South Africa and India on their way to lifting the T20 World Cup trophy in 2016. But the champions were stunned by Afghanistan in the Super 10 stage in Nagpur.

The Afghans posted 123 runs on the board after being put in to bat first, with Najibullah Zadran contributing the most with a 48-run knock.

West Indies were on course for a comfortable victory when Johnson Charles struck two sixes in the second over.

But the Asian side made a stirring comeback through excellent bowling from Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, recording a famous six-run win.

Australia vs Zimbabwe (2007)

Australia were the best cricket team in the world back in 2009. So when they faced Zimbabwe in the inaugural T20 World Cup, everyone expected the Aussies to breeze past their opponents.

However, what happened in that match was shocking, as the Chevrons produced one of their best performances in Cape Town, South Africa.

Zimbabwe restricted their formidable opponents to a meagre 138, thanks to a brilliant bowling spell from Elton Chigumbura, who claimed three wickets.

Brendan Taylor then starred with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 60-run knock to lead his team to a memorable five-wicket win.
