Man United believe Wharton is too similar to Mainoo

Manchester United are pondering a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton this summer.

The England international has caught the eye in the Premier League this term, creating 11 big chances and impressing big clubs with his performances.

Wharton played a key role as his side lifted the FA Cup last term. However, the Red Devils have some reservations about signing the 22-year-old.

According to the Daily Mail, ‘there are some concerns that his style of play is too similar to Kobbie Mainoo’s and that they would not be able to operate as a partnership’.

It is also worth noting that United are not alone in the race. Chelsea are also in the mix and might move to secure his services.

Wharton may not be the right fit for United

Wharton is one of the most technically assured young midfielders in England, capable of dictating tempo and unlocking defences.

However, his lack of athleticism, particularly in recovery runs and duels, and his relatively modest off-the-ball intensity raise questions.

At United, where midfield battles can be relentless and physically demanding, those shortcomings could be exposed.

If United sign Wharton, they must build the right structure around him.

That means pairing him with a pure holding midfielder, someone defensively dominant, positionally disciplined and capable of covering ground.

Without that balance, United risk assembling a midfield that looks elegant on the ball but vulnerable without it.
