Manchester City vs Liverpool – FA Cup quarter-final preview

Manchester City host Liverpool in a blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final clash at the Etihad Stadium, with both sides hoping to take a major step toward Wembley Stadium.

The fixture brings together two of England’s biggest clubs, whose rivalry has defined much of the last decade of domestic football, and like all football live scores, the live updates will be closely followed by football fans in the UK and worldwide.

City head into the contest with momentum on their side. Pep Guardiola’s team has been strong in domestic cup competitions in recent seasons and boasts an outstanding record in the FA Cup at home.

They have won the vast majority of their FA Cup matches in recent years and are currently enjoying a long unbeaten run in home ties in the competition. That dominance has helped establish City as one of the most consistent cup teams in England.

Liverpool are dangerous opponents despite an inconsistent campaign. The Reds have often produced strong performances against City and will be determined to keep their hopes of silverware alive.

Historically, Liverpool have enjoyed the upper hand in the overall head-to-head record between the two clubs, although City have had the better of recent meetings this season.

City’s recent form has been mixed but encouraging overall. They recently secured the League Cup with a win over Arsenal and have produced some impressive performances in other competitions.

However, defeats in Europe have shown they are not invincible. Guardiola will expect his players to deliver another big performance in front of their home fans as they aim for a place in the semi-finals.

Liverpool’s recent results have also fluctuated. As those who have followed live football scores every week have seen – the Reds have struggled for consistency in the league but have shown their attacking potential in cup competitions.

Much could depend on the performance of Mohamed Salah, who has a strong record against Man City and remains Liverpool’s most dangerous attacking threat. If he is fit and firing, Liverpool will believe they have the quality to trouble City’s defence.

Team news could play a significant role in the outcome of the match. Man City are expected to rotate slightly in the FA Cup, with James Trafford likely to continue in goal after featuring in earlier rounds of the competition.

Several defenders, including Ruben Dias and John Stones, have been dealing with fitness concerns and may not start.

Liverpool also have injury issues to contend with. Goalkeeper Alisson has been unavailable, meaning Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to continue between the posts.

Salah had recently been dealing with a minor injury but is expected to return to the starting lineup. Arne Slot may also need to adapt his defensive setup due to injuries and squad absences.

Both teams possess significant attacking firepower. City will rely heavily on Erling Braut Haaland, who has already scored against Liverpool this season and remains their primary goal threat.

Liverpool’s forward line, featuring Salah alongside players such as Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike, has the ability to create chances and score goals against any opponent.

Given City’s strong home record and current form, they are widely viewed as slight favourites heading into the match.

However, clashes between these two sides are rarely predictable, and Liverpool’s attacking quality means they are more than capable of causing an upset.

A closely contested match is expected, but City’s overall balance and home advantage could give them the edge in what promises to be another thrilling chapter in this fierce rivalry.

A narrow victory for Guardiola’s side appears the most likely outcome, with both teams likely to score.
